September 17: Memorial of the Stigmata of St. Francis

9/17/2024

Picture
On Tuesday, September 17 our parish will be celebrating the 800th Anniversary of the Stigmata of St. Francis of Assisi with a Solemn Mass.
  • 5:15 PM - Sung Vespers (hymns & Magnificat)
  • 5:30 PM - Solemn Mass (i.e. Mass with special musical accompaniment)

Celebrating the Gift of the Stigmata (1224-2024)

Ancient biographies tell us that Francis of Assisi, in the summer of 1224, was in a moment of human and spiritual crisis and retreated to Mount Verna in Casentino. It was there that he received the stigmata, from the Greek word meaning to a “brand” or a “mark. In the Christian context it refers to the bodily marks resembling the wounds of the crucified Christ. St. Francis was the first person, historically recorded, who bore the marks of the crucified Christ in his hands, his feet, and in his side.

St. Bonaventure wrote of St. Francis, “While Francis was praying on the mountainside, he saw a Seraph (angel) with six fiery and shining wings descend from the height of heaven. […] There appeared between the wings the figure of a man crucified, with his hands and feet extended in the form of a cross and fastened to a cross. […] When Francis saw this, he was overwhelmed, and his heart was flooded with a mixture of joy and sorrow. He rejoiced because of the gracious way Christ looked upon him under the form of a Seraph, but the fact that he was fastened to a cross pierced his soul with a sword of compassionate sorrow.”

When the vision disappeared, writes Bonaventure, Francis was left with a “marvelous ardor” in his heart. At the same time, there “was imprinted on his body markings that were no less marvelous.”
