Why do Catholics celebrate All Souls' Day? The Church is composed of the faithful living upon the earth and those who have gone before us. The latter includes the Saints in Heaven and the faithful Souls being purified in Purgatory. Just as on November 1st we honor those who are with God, on November 2nd Catholics celebrate a Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed. Also known as All Souls' Day, on this day we honor them for their fidelity in life, as well as pray for them, since they are being purified before entering the All Holy Presence of God. As Revelation 21:27 says of the Heavenly Jerusalem, “… nothing unclean shall enter in.” ¿Por qué celebran los Católicos el Día de Difuntos?
La Iglesia se compone de los fieles que viven en la tierra y de los que nos han precedido. Estos últimos incluyen a los Santos en el Cielo y a las Almas fieles que se purifican en el Purgatorio. Así como el 1° de noviembre honramos a los que están con Dios, el 2 de noviembre los Católicos celebramos la Conmemoración de Todos los Fieles Difuntos. También conocido como Día de Todos los Fieles Difuntos, en este día los honramos por su fidelidad en vida, así como rezamos por ellos, ya que están siendo purificados antes de entrar en la Santísima Presencia de Dios. Como dice Apocalipsis 21:27 de la Jerusalén Celestial, «... nada impuro entrará».  - Holy Day of Obligation -
What is a Holy Day of Obligation? A holy day of obligation is a type of solemnity. In the Church, solemnities are special days when we reflect on a particular mystery of our faith or remember a particular saint. The holy days of obligation are solemnities that have something distinctive about them: they’re so important that the Church asks us to attend Mass on these days, even if they don’t land on a Sunday. Sadly, we tend to fixate on the “obligation” part. Instead, we can think of them as opportunities. At their core, these feasts are celebrations, not obligations. The Church is not merely demanding that we “go to Mass.” The Church is demanding that we celebrate! You can even see this in the name itself. We get our word holiday from the concept of a “holy” day, and so a “holy day” of obligation is really a “holiday” of obligation. ¿Qué es un día de obligación?
Un día de obligación es un tipo de solemnidad. En la Iglesia, las solemnidades son días especiales en los que reflexionamos sobre un misterio concreto de nuestra fe o recordamos a un santo en particular. Los días de obligación son solemnidades que tienen algo especial: son tan importantes que la Iglesia nos pide que asistamos a Misa en esos días, aunque no coincidan en domingo. Lamentablemente, tendemos a fijarnos en la parte de «obligación». En cambio, podemos considerarlas como oportunidades. En el fondo, estas fiestas son celebraciones, no obligaciones. La Iglesia no nos exige simplemente que «vayamos a Misa». La Iglesia exige que celebremos. Esto se ve incluso en el propio nombre. La palabra fiesta viene del concepto de día «santo», por lo que un «día santo» de obligación es en realidad un «día festivo» de obligación. |
