On May 2, the Chicago Catholic newspaper visited St. Thomas of Canterbury church for our annual Mariam Dearit celebration. Catholics in Eritrea have a special connection to the Blessed Mother through the Mariam Dearit Shrine, which houses a bronze statue of the Virgin Mary inside the trunk of an ancient baobab tree. Every year, our Eritrean community hosts its own festival, starting with Mass in the ancient Ge'ez Rite.
