We will receive five new auxiliary bishops this month. Pope Francis named Bishops-elect Timothy J. O’Malley, Lawrence J. Sullivan, José María Garcia-Maldonado, Robert M. Fedek and John S. Siemianowski, all archdiocesan priests, to assist Cardinal Cupich in the administration and pastoral care of the Archdiocese of Chicago.
The episcopal ordination of our new bishops-elect will take place on Wednesday, February 26, at 2 PM at Holy Name Cathedral. Due to space limitations, this will be an invitation-only event at the Cathedral. However, the ordination will be livestreamed on the Archdiocesan YouTube channel. Please continue to pray for our bishops-elect and the parishes and ministries in which they will soon be serving. The 2025 Annual Catholic Appeal offers us the opportunity to support parish spiritual renewal efforts, scholarships for Catholic schools, and our catechetical leaders and faith formation programs. Your gift brings hope to so many throughout our city and right here at Mary, Mother of God Parish – we received financial support from Catholic Relief Services for our Food Pantry and Soup Kitchen. The parish counts on your generosity to meet our goal of $55,126. When the contributions exceed the goal, the parish receives a rebate. This means any money raised over our goal, will come directly back to the parish for our use. Whether you have responded to the Annual Catholic Appeal mailing from Cardinal Cupich, returned an envelope from the back of church, or made a gift online at annualcatholicappeal.com, thank you for your contribution. Together we bring hope!
¡Juntos brindamos esperanza! All parish offices will be closed on Monday, February 17 in honor of the Presidents' Day holiday.
Todas las oficinas parroquiales estarán cerradas el lunes 17 de febrero en honor al feriado del Día de los Presidentes. “There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same spirit; there are different forms of service but the same Lord.” –1 Corinthians 12: 4-5 We've created an online volunteer form to make it easier for parishioners to get involved at the parish. You'll find a permanent link on the homepage of the parish website. Click "Get Involved" from the main menu and select "Volunteer" from the drop-down menu.
Blessings from God are meant to be shared. If you or a loved one are looking for ways to share your gifts with the community, we encourage you to check out the form today! Let us come together to serve God and one another. Highlights from the 2025 Mary, Mother of God Spaghetti Dinner! Thank you to all of the volunteers who organized and served this meal. And thank you to everyone who attended this fundraising event for the parish. *Photos courtesy of parish volunteer Luana Lienhart
Maintenance MechanicHours: Full time
Parish: Mary, Mother of God Parish (1220 W. Catalpa, Chicago, IL 60640) Position Summary: Aids in assuring the optimal functioning of building systems including fire/safety, HVAC, lighting, mechanical and plumbing in all parish facilities. Responsible for grounds keeping activities including landscaping, maintenance of sidewalks, and parking areas, and the removal of snow and trash. Performs repairs to buildings and equipment as required, utilizing basic knowledge of electrical, plumbing, mechanical, carpentry, masonry, and painting work. Dear Parishioners:
At Mary, Mother of God parish, Christ shines forth in our many faces and traditions. We friars love all the expressions of faith here and we try to serve you by learning your cultures. To better minister at our parish, I have begun learning Vietnamese. Seeing my progress, Fr. Alejandro and our Conventual Franciscan Order have graciously permitted me to visit Vietnam for immersion. Thus, I will be away studying in Vietnam from February 5 – March 19. Upon my return, not only will I be better able to minister to our Vietnamese parishioners, but I hope to create relationships with Vietnamese friars for the future. In the short term, having one less priest here for a month and a half will be challenging, but I believe that the long-term benefits for our community are worth the sacrifice. I want to thank Mary, Mother of God Parish, Fr. Alejandro, and the Conventual Franciscan Order for supporting me; you have all been so kind. Please continue to pray for me, as I know that this experience will come with difficulties. I will do my best to remain in touch with the parish while I am away: I will pray for you all daily, offer up my sufferings for your needs, and will remain accessible through e-mail. May God give you His peace! Fr. Thomas "I was so pleased to see the kids cheerfully guiding the food recipients through the food selection maze. All of them were engaged with the people they were helping. With warm smiles, the kids were obviously trying to help people with language difficulty understand what puzzling food items consisted of and how they might be used. I went home that day feeling better about the future of the Church and society in general." Our parish food pantry depends on the generosity of volunteers to keep its doors open and operations running smoothly. We are grateful for this on-going partnership with the eighth graders of Saints JFX School in Wilmette. This is a weekly way for students to put their faith into action!
Check out photos from this year’s celebration of La Virgin de Suyapa. Last Sunday, the Honduran community of our parish hosted a reception after the 12:30 PM Spanish Mass at St. Ita church to honor The Virgin of Suyapa who is the Patroness of Honduras. Everyone was invited to join in the festivities in Jubilee Hall after Mass. Additionally, since it was the Fest of the Presentation of the Lord, Mexican parishioners brought dolls representing the infant Jesus to Mass to be blessed. *Fotos cortesía del voluntario parroquial Damian Chlanda y Dan Lagacy./Photos courtesy of parish volunteer Damian Chlanda & Dan Lagacy.
