SCAM ALERT

9/16/2024

ATTENTION - Scam Reported
Parishioners have reported receiving emails from someone claiming to be Fr. Alejandro Lopez asking them to "run an errand discreetly." This is a SCAM and should be reported IMMEDIATELY!

DO NOT respond to these messages. Instead, call the parish office. If you ever receive an email or phone call from someone claiming to be one of our priests or staff members asking for money or your personal information, the first thing to do is call the parish office at 773-561-5343. It is better to be safe than sorry in these situations.

Picture
Over the last month, our parish Soup Kitchen has received several kind donations of items from its wish lists. Thank you to the generous people who purchased pie serving spoons, cutting boards, sandwich bags, lemonade powder, ranch dressing, bowls, plastic utensils, snack bags of chips, and Tampax packets for our Outreach Ministries!

You’re Invited! We’re forming a new homeless outreach ministry

9/15/2024

"Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers or sisters of mine, you did for me." -Matthew 25:40
Picture
As you all know, many people find refuge on the steps of our three churches. In response, a group of parish volunteers has come together to better serve our neighbors in need. Most folks on the street are just looking for kindness and direction. This group will be the parish's first response (rather than calling 911) when someone is making a home on parish property or disrupting parish activities. Our hope is to get to know our neighbors in need and see how we can connect them to community resources.

Help us grow this new ministry! If you or someone you know, are curious about our group, please join us for the next meeting on Sunday, September 15 at 10:30 AM in the Parish Center (5545 N. Paulina - next to St. Gregory the Great church). If you have any questions, you can email our group secretary Stephanie Held.

Farewell to James Murphy

9/15/2024

This month, we say goodbye to James Murphy who led the parish ministry of Canterbury House which served the community through prayer, outreach, fellowship, and Catholic social thought.

James used his experience as a Catholic Worker to organize community roundtables, a regular Tuesday Bible Study, Wednesday night dinners with recently arrived refugee families, and much more! He also began the collaboration with Loyola Chicago to create our Solidarity Gardens. (A network of garden plots that provide food for the St. Thomas of Canterbury Soup Kitchen and Food Pantry.)

We give thanks to God for all of the hard work, time, and talent James has shared with Mary, Mother of God parish over the last three years. His friendly attitude and willingness to help will be missed. May the Lord continue to bless him in his future endeavors. Amen!

All in all, we have made $9,564.81 since our first event in 2012! Thank you to everyone who joined us this year and help raised money to preserve the historical buildings of our parish.

1st Ever Peter Maurin Conference

9/6/2024

Parish ministries – St. Gregory's Hall and Canterbury House – hosted the first ever conference exploring the life, writing, and sources of Catholic social thinker Peter Maurin. Attendees considered the vision of Peter Maurin, co-founder of the Catholic Worker movement. He promoted philosophical personalism and economic distributism and a program of renewal based on Catholic Social Tradition. (Photos courtesy of parish volunteer Damian Chlanda.)

You can read a recap and reflection on the conference from one of the attendees down below or by clicking here.
