We are delighted to welcome
Fr. Boniface Muia, OFM Conv., to Mary, Mother of God Parish. Fr. Boniface is joining us following his sabbatical at Marytown, where he serves as a tailor, making the Conventuals' iconic gray habits; before that, he ministered in Dearborn Heights, Michigan. Fr. Boniface is originally from Kenya, where he says he fell in love with God's creation.
Be sure to say hello when you see him around!

Q: Please introduce yourself. What is your name and where are you from?

A: My name is Fr. Boniface Muia. I come from Kenya. I come from a small town called Emali. Emali is like two hours' drive from the capital city, Nairobi, in the southeast of Kenya.

Q: How did you become a Conventual Franciscan? What drew you to the Franciscans?
A: When I was young, I used to see priests, who were missionaries, come to our parish at home. They used to do Mass for us and I got attracted. But I did not know much about Franciscans or other congregations. As I grew, I knew there is a difference between the diocesan priesthood and the missionary priesthood. So, I wanted to become a missionary priest, and it happened that Franciscans are missionary priests. I made the application to the Franciscans. I also made applications to other congregations. But the Conventual Franciscan Friars were the first ones to respond. I attended the “Come and See” and I was accepted. And here I am. Everything has been good. I came to love the Franciscan way of life, the Franciscan charism, which emphasizes very much on community, fraternity and brotherhood. And I love it. So far, so good.

Q: How long have you been with the Conventual Franciscans?

A: I joined in 1999. That is 27 years now that I have been in the order, the Franciscan fraternity.

Q: How long have you been a priest?

A: This is now my 17th year because I was ordained in 2010 - June 3, 2010.

Q: What did you like to do when you were growing up?

A: I like nature, like St. Francis. I like to work with natural things and the environment, like planting trees, conservation, soil conservation; restoring nature to its original state. That is my passion. I love to do anything with the nature and environment.

Q: Is this your first time in Chicago?

A: No, this is not my first time in Chicago. I came to Chicago last year, 2025 [April], and went to Marytown [in Libertyville] for my sabbatical. For the last year I have been there and that is where I learned how to make [our] habits.  It took like 3 months to learn. That is one of my hobbies, and that is something that I know I have a talent in. So, I do that for the novices, I do for the friars; I also do for myself.

Q: Did you make the habit you are wearing?

A: Yeah. This is the latest that I have made for myself. Just last month [June] I made this.

Q: How long does it take to make a habit?

A: Depending on how fast you are or how experienced you are, it may take between 10 to 15 hours.

Q: What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

A: I like to walk. I like to run. Athletics, walking around nature, looking at the lake, the natural habitats. Most of the time I love to walk around nature and see nature at its original state. That is what I love most.

Q: Do you like movies or television?

A: No, no, not much. I am not good in that.

Q: Do you enjoy reading or listening to music?

A: Yes, I listen to music and I read books. I listen to religious music. Back at home we do our local music, the African music, and I listen to that a lot. And I read some nice books, religious books, and also other books.

Q: What is your favorite food?

A: I love pork and fish. I love very much those two.

Q: Speaking of pork, do you like hot dogs?

A: Yes!

Q: We’re in Chicago – we must ask, do you put ketchup on your hot dogs?

A: A little bit. Not the hot [condiments], but just a little bit. I would say I am moderate on that.

Q: Who is your favorite saint and why?

A: My favorite saint is Francis because I think his charism is so rich for me. The charism or spirituality of St. Francis is the richest out of all the saints, according to me. It is so touching and so simple, so down to earth and so real, and so friendly and brotherly and sisterly. So, I love Saint Francis very much.

Q: What are you looking forward to at Mary, Mother of God Parish?

A: I am looking forward to getting to work here in Chicago, getting to know the people here, getting to know the different cultures of people in the city and different ways of doing things. Building a community together with the people and working together with them for the glory of God and also for the edification of humanity.

R: Me llamo P. Boniface Muia.

Y me encanta.

R: Me gusta caminar. Me gusta correr.

R: No, no, no mucho.
