Fr. Thomas is Going to Vietnam

Dear Parishioners:

At Mary, Mother of God parish, Christ shines forth in our many faces and traditions. We friars love all the expressions of faith here and we try to serve you by learning your cultures.

To better minister at our parish, I have begun learning Vietnamese. Seeing my progress, Fr. Alejandro and our Conventual Franciscan Order have graciously permitted me to visit Vietnam for immersion. Thus, I will be away studying in Vietnam from February 5 – March 19. Upon my return, not only will I be better able to minister to our Vietnamese parishioners, but I hope to create relationships with Vietnamese friars for the future. 
In the short term, having one less priest here for a month and a half will be challenging, but I believe that the long-term benefits for our community are worth the sacrifice.

I want to thank Mary, Mother of God Parish, Fr. Alejandro, and the Conventual Franciscan Order for supporting me; you have all been so kind. Please continue to pray for me, as I know that this experience will come with difficulties. I will do my best to remain in touch with the parish while I am away: I will pray for you all daily, offer up my sufferings for your needs, and will remain accessible through e-mail.

Estimados feligreses:
 
En la parroquia María, Madre de Dios, Cristo resplandece en nuestros múltiples rostros y tradiciones. Nosotros los frailes amamos todas las expresiones de fe aquí y tratamos de servirles aprendiendo sus culturas.
 
Para servir mejor a nuestra parroquia, he empezado a aprender vietnamita. Viendo mi progreso, el P. Alejandro y nuestra Orden Franciscana Conventual me han permitido amablemente visitar Vietnam para una inmersión. Por lo tanto, estaré fuera estudiando en Vietnam del 5 de febrero al 19 de marzo. A mi regreso, no sólo voy a ser más capaz de atender a nuestros feligreses vietnamitas, pero espero crear relaciones con los frailes vietnamitas para el futuro.
 
A corto plazo, tener un sacerdote menos aquí durante un mes y medio será un reto, pero creo que los beneficios a largo plazo para nuestra comunidad merecen el sacrificio.
 
Quiero agradecer a la Parroquia María, Madre de Dios, al P. Alejandro, y a la Orden Franciscana Conventual por apoyarme; todos ustedes han sido muy amables. Por favor, sigan rezando por mí, ya que sé que esta experiencia vendrá con dificultades. Haré todo lo posible por mantenerme en contacto con la parroquia durante mi ausencia: Rezaré diariamente por todos ustedes, ofreceré mis sufrimientos por sus necesidades y permaneceré accesible a través del correo electrónico.

Anh chị Em thân mến:

Trong Giáo xứ Đức Maria, Mẹ Thiên Chúa, Chúa Kitô đã tỏa sáng trên nhiều khuôn mặt và truyền thông của chúng ta. Anh em tu sĩ chúng tôi yêu thích tất cả những phương cách thể hiện đức tin ở đây và chúng tôi cố gắng phục vụ anh chị em bằng cách học hỏi nền văn hóa của anh chị em. 

Để phục vụ giáo xứ tốt hơn, tôi đã bắt đầu học tiếng Việt. Nhìn thấy sự tiến bộ của tôi, Fr. Alejandro và Dòng Phanxicô Tu viện của chúng tôi đã ân cần cho phép tôi đến thăm Việt Nam để hòa nhập. Vì vậy, tôi sẽ đi học ở Việt Nam từ ngày 5 tháng 2 đến ngày 19 tháng 3. Khi trở về, tôi không những chỉ có khả năng phục vụ giáo dân Việt Nam tốt hơn mà còn hy vọng trong tương lai sẽ tạo dựng được mối quan hệ với qúy Cha Việt Nam.

Trong một thời gian ngắn,  việc vắng đi một linh mục ở đây trong một tháng rưỡi sẽ là một khó khăn, nhưng tôi tin rằng cũng đáng để chúng ta phải hy sinh vì lợi ích lâu dài cho cộng đồng. 

Tôi xin cảm ơn Giáo xứ Đức Maria, Giáo xứ Mẹ Thiên Chúa, cám ơn Cha. Alejandro và Dòng Phanxicô đã hỗ trợ tôi với t6át cả thiện cảm. Xin hãy tiếp tục cầu nguyện cho tôi, vì tôi biết rằng trải nghiệm này sẽ gặp nhiều khó khăn. Tôi sẽ cố gắng hết sức để giữ liên lạc với giáo xứ khi tôi đi vắng: Tôi sẽ cầu nguyện cho tất cả các bạn hàng ngày, dâng lên những đau khổ của tôi vì nhu cầu của các bạn và sẽ vẫn có thể truy cập được qua e-mail.
