Interview with Friar Maximilian Anselm Rewa OFM, Conv.

We have a new friar helping out at the parish this summer! We are happy to introduce you all to Friar Maximilian Anselm Rewa. Get to know him a little bit better and see what kind of work he will be doing at Mary, Mother of God Parish for the next couple months.

What drew you to the Franciscans?
My first contact with the Conventual Franciscans was through Marytown – the National Shrine of St. Maximilian Kolbe and the Militia of the Immaculata.  What attracted me to the friars were their strong sense of community life, their spirituality and devotion (especially Marian devotion), and their rich history and traditions.  Having been with the Franciscans for three years now, all these things have been confirmed as well as much more and I can truly consider the other friars to be my brothers.

Where were you before coming to Mary, Mother of God Parish?
I grew up in a Catholic family in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and after high school, I earned a degree in History and Social Studies from Central Michigan University. Later, I received a degree in Philosophy from Mundelein Seminary and spent about two years working as a substitute teacher. 

​The past year, I have lived in San Antonio, TX while studying at the Oblate School of Theology and my ministry was the Franciscan Outreach Ministry – serving the poor in a soup kitchen – at the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

Before my time in San Antonio, my first two years of formation with the friars were Postulancy (2021-’22) and Novitiate (2022-’23).  Postulancy was here in Chicago and one of my ministries was teaching religion classes at the St. Thomas of Canterbury School.  The novitiate was in Arroyo Grande, CA and my two ministries then were at a food pantry and prison ministry.

What will you be doing here at the parish?
I will be here at Mary, Mother of God Parish for most of the summer and my two primary objectives are to improve my skills using the Spanish language and to experience our friar’s ministries in a parish setting.  The ministries that I will be involved in include the Food Pantry at St. Thomas of Canterbury as well as help with Canterbury House and some catechesis (also at Canterbury House).  I will be getting practice using my Spanish skills in all these ministries while I am taking one Spanish course through the City Colleges of Chicago.

What are some of the things you enjoy in your spare time?
I enjoy spending time outdoors, especially in the Summer and Fall; some of my favorite activities include fishing, camping, hiking, swimming, and running. Other things I enjoy are reading (religious, history, or fantasy), watching movies (fantasy, science fiction, or action/adventure) and sports (baseball and football), and spending time with friends and family.  Some of my interests include history, astronomy, and music.

¿Qué te atrajo a los franciscanos?
Mi primer contacto con los Franciscanos Conventuales fue a través de Marytown – el Santuario Nacional de San Maximiliano Kolbe y la Milicia de la Inmaculada. Lo que me atrajo de los frailes fue su fuerte sentido de la vida comunitaria, su espiritualidad y devoción (especialmente la devoción mariana), y su rica historia y tradiciones. Después de haber estado con los franciscanos durante tres años, todas estas cosas se han confirmado, así como mucho más, y realmente puedo considerar a los otros frailes como mis hermanos

¿Dónde estabas antes de venir a la Parroquia María, Madre de Dios?
Crecí en una familia católica en Grand Rapids, Michigan, y después de la escuela secundaria, obtuve un título en Historia y Estudios Sociales de la Universidad Central de Michigan y más tarde un título en Filosofía del Seminario de Mundelein y pasé unos dos años trabajando como maestro sustituto.
 
El año pasado he vivido en San Antonio, TX mientras estudiaba en la Escuela Oblata de Teología y mi ministerio fue el Franciscan Outreach Ministry (sirviendo a los pobres en un cocina de sopa) en el Santuario de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe.

​Antes de mi tiempo en San Antonio fueron mis primeros dos años de formación con los frailes Postulantado (2021-'22) y Noviciado (2022-'23). El postulantado fue aquí en Chicago y uno de mis ministerios fue dar clases de religión en la escuela Santo Tomás de Canterbury. El noviciado fue en Arroyo Grande, CA y mis dos ministerios entonces fueron en una despensa de alimentos y el ministerio de la prisión.

​¿Qué harás aquí en la parroquia?
Estaré aquí en la Parroquia María, Madre de Dios la mayor parte del verano y mis dos objetivos principales son mejorar mis habilidades en el uso del idioma español y experimentar los ministerios de nuestros frailes en un entorno parroquial. Los ministerios en los que voy a participar incluyen la despensa de alimentos en Santo Tomás de Canterbury, así como ayudar con en Canterbury House y algo de catequesis (también en Canterbury House). Estaré practicando mis habilidades en español en todos estos ministerios mientras estoy tomando un curso de español a través de los Colegios de la Ciudad de Chicago.

¿Qué te gusta hacer en tu tiempo libre?
Me gusta pasar tiempo al aire libre, sobre todo en verano y otoño; algunas de mis actividades favoritas son pescar, acampar, hacer senderismo, nadar y correr. Otras cosas que me gustan son la lectura (religiosa, histórica o fantástica), ver películas (de fantasía, ciencia ficción o acción/aventura) y deportes (béisbol y fútbol), y pasar tiempo con amigos y familiares. Algunos de mis intereses son la historia, la astronomía y la música.

Điều gì đã thu hút Thầy đến với Dòng Phanxicô?
Lần tiếp xúc đầu tiên của tôi với các tu sĩ dòng Phanxicô là thông qua tu viện ở Marytown- Đền thờ quốc gia của Thánh Maximilian Kolbe và Lực lượng dân quân của Immaculata.  Điều thu hút tôi đối với các tu sĩ là sự ý thức mạnh mẽ về đời sống cộng đồng, tâm linh và lòng sùng kính (đặc biệt là lòng sùng kính Đức Mẹ), cũng như duy trì lịch sử và truyền thống phong phú của các ngài.  Tôi đã được sống chung với các tu sĩ Phanxicô được ba năm ,tất cả những điều nói trên đã được xác nhận là đúng để hơn thế nữa, tôi thực sự có thể coi các tu sĩ khác như là huynh đệ của mình.

Trước khi đến với Giáo xứ Đức Maria Mẹ Thiên Chúa này, Thầy đã từng ở đâu?
Tôi lớn lên trong một gia đình Công giáo ở Grand Rapids, Michigan, và sau khi tốt nghiệp trung học, tôi tốt nghiệp với văn bằng về Lịch sử và Nghiên cứu Xã hội của Đại học Central Michigan, sau đó là bằng Triết học của Chủng viện Mundelein và có khoảng hai năm làm giáo viên dự phòng.

Năm vừa qua tôi đã sống ở San Antonio, TX khi theo học tại Trường Thần học Hiến sĩ và phục vụ trong công tác Mục vụ Truyền giáo của Dòng Phanxicô (phục vụ người nghèo trong bếp nấu ăn) tại Đền thờ Đức Mẹ Guadalupe.  Trước thời gian ở San Antonio, tôi đã được đào tạo hai năm đầu tiên với các tu huynh Postulancy (2021-’22) và Tập viện (2022-’23).  Tu huynh Postulancy đã ở Chicago và một trong những việc mục vụ của tôi là dạy các lớp Giáo lý tại Trường St. Thomas of Canterbury.  Tập viện ở Arroyo Grande, CA và hai mục vụ khác của tôi lúc đó ở kho lương thực và mục vụ nhà tù.

Thày sẽ làm gì ở Giáo xứ này?
