​Maintenance Mechanic

Parish: Mary, Mother of God Parish (1220 W. Catalpa, Chicago, IL 60640)

Position Summary: Aids in assuring the optimal functioning of building systems including fire/safety, HVAC, lighting, mechanical and plumbing in all parish facilities. Responsible for grounds keeping activities including landscaping, maintenance of sidewalks, and parking areas, and the removal of snow and trash. Performs repairs to buildings and equipment as required, utilizing basic knowledge of electrical, plumbing, mechanical, carpentry, masonry, and painting work.
Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for security of parish grounds, contacting Facilities and Maintenance Director, Pastor, Operations Director and local police department when needed as a result of damage or vandalism to grounds.
  • Assure optimal functioning of building systems including fire/safety, HVAC, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing.
  • Perform maintenance service and small repairs in the areas of electrical, plumbing, mechanical, carpentry, masonry, and painting.
  • Ensure parish machinery is well maintained and that maintenance procedures are followed.
  • Utilize existing information and schedules and develop additional schedules as needed.
  • With approval of Facilities and Maintenance Director, supervise work with outside contractors for routine preventative activities such as safety inspections, pest control, and other preventative maintenance on facility systems.
  • Install, remove and clean air conditioning window units.
  • Replace batteries in smoke detectors/carbon monoxide detectors.
  • Replace light bulbs as necessary.
  • Mop, strip, and wax floors.
  • Vacuum and shampoo carpeted areas as needed.
  • Support snow removal needs to ensure safe conditions for parishioners, school, and parish personnel as well as visitors.
  • Ensure parish machinery is well maintained and that maintenance procedures are followed.
  • May be requested to perform general labor tasks such as sweeping, trash removal, and cleaning with strong attention to detail.
  • Set up for activities in church and school.
  • Perform other responsibilities as assigned.

This position has an annualized salary range of $33,345 - $40,755. An employee’s pay within the salary range will be based on many factors including but not limited to: relevant education, qualifications, experience, skills, geographic location, and organizational needs.

Requirements:
  • Minimum of High School graduate, GED or equivalent, with trade school classes. (Post High School coursework in trade-related field leading to certificate/licensure or Associate Degree in technical field highly preferred.)
  • Minimum of 3 years' experience in maintenance or a related field such as building maintenance and related systems.
  • Basic knowledge and experience in electrical, plumbing, carpentry, machine servicing, painting, and other trades.
  • Knowledge of use and maintenance of power and hand tools used on the job.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Ability to read and comprehend written instructions and communicate with others in writing.
  • Familiarity with basic PC skills, email, and Internet.
  • Fluency in English and Spanish preferred.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable vehicle.
  • Work overtime if needed.
  • Weekend hours occasionally.
  • Demonstrate understanding, respect, and support of the Catholic Church teaching, mission, and values.

Physical & Mental Requirements/Functions:
  • Ability to work outside in a variety of weather conditions. Climb ladders and stairs as necessary, including accessing roof structures.
  • Seeing/Comprehending: 50 to 100% of the time Hearing: 50 to 100% of the time. Walking Standing: 50 to 100% of the time. Lifting weight up to 50 pounds: 50 to 100% of the time. Climbing/Stooping/Kneeling: 50 to 100% of the time. Hand/Finger Dexterity: 50 to 100% of the time Speaking: 50 to 100% of the time.
