Presentation of the Lord - Candlemas (2026)

On February 2, Catholics celebrate the feast of the Presentation of the Lord which is also called Candlemas. This feast takes place 40 days after the feast of the Nativity. In keeping with Jewish law, Mary and Joseph brought their baby to the temple in Jerusalem for purification and dedication (Exodus 13:1).

When Holy Simeon saw the baby Jesus, he said, “For my eyes have seen your salvation which you prepared in sight of all the peoples, a LIGHT for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel.” From these words comes the tradition of blessing candles at Mass. That's where the term “Candlemas” comes from.

El 2 de febrero, los católicos celebran la fiesta de la Presentación del Señor, también conocida como la Candelaria. Esta fiesta se celebra 40 días después de la Natividad. Siguiendo la ley judía, María y José llevaron al niño Jesús al templo de Jerusalén para su purificación y consagración (Éxodo 13:1).

Cuando el santo Simeón vio al niño Jesús, dijo: «Porque mis ojos han visto tu salvación, la que has preparado a la vista de todos los pueblos: luz para iluminar a las naciones y gloria de tu pueblo Israel». De estas palabras proviene la tradición de bendecir las velas durante la Misa. De ahí el nombre de «Candelaria».
