First Communion

Holy Eucharist is one of the sacraments of Christian Initiation. It commemorates the last supper of Jesus with his disciples before his passion and resurrection.
Religious Education students are prepared to celebrate the sacraments of First Confession and First Holy Communion in Grade 2. However, if for any reason a child was unable to celebrate the sacraments at this particular time, sacramental preparation and celebration will be provided to all children who are beyond this grade level.
Regulations Concerning the Reception of the Sacraments
Children are to be enrolled in religious education classes the year prior to the year of sacramental reception as a norm. This means if a child is to receive communion in Grade 2, they are to be enrolled in Grade 1. The same holds true for the other sacraments. Parents must show proof of the child’s baptism and other sacraments that have been received.

Baptismal Certificate
If a child has celebrated the sacrament of Baptism at the Church of St. Ita, we have his/her baptismal certificate on file. We ask that parents request a copy of the certificate at the beginning of Religious Education classes if you do not have a copy.
If a child was baptized elsewhere, you will need to provide us with a copy of the Baptismal certificate at the beginning of the year as well.
Parent Meetings
Parent Meetings are conducted for parents whose child is being prepared for the reception of a sacrament. Parent Meetings will take place in Jubilee Hall and last approximately one hour. Parent attendance at all scheduled Parent Meetings is mandatory.
Dates for Parent Meetings are listed on the Religious Education Calendar.

Registration
All students must be registered in the Religious Education Program and must have a completed registration form on file in the Religious Education Office. Please see the Religious Education page for more information on registering.
Attendance
All students must be regular and punctual in attendance. If a child misses classes frequently without a valid reason, the religious education coordinator and the catechist will ask to meet with the parents to address the issue. In addition, children are expected to attend both Sunday Liturgy and classes on a consistent basis. This is the only way they will be able to connect and comprehend the material(s) presented in class.
