The Medallion Windows

The stained glass windows were inspired by the world-renowned windows of the Cathedral of Chartres in the north of France. Made by the famous art-glass manufacturing firm of Maumejean Frères of France, according to designs sent by [architect Henry J.] Schlacks, they contain over 200,000 separate pieces of glass set into the 2,800 square feet of window space. Various shades of blue predominate, enlivened by a secondary dominant of cardinal red which is blended with bright flashes of gold, white, and green.

Many consider these rich, brilliant stained glass Medallion windows to be the most outstanding feature of the Church interior. The main purpose of these windows, however, is not décor. The windows instruct; they serve as sermons and teach people visually.

-From A Tour of the Church of St. Ita, compiled and written by Mary Ann Smajo and Linda Sibio, with contributions from Marge Britton, Marieluise Kailing, and Dan Lagacy.
