Students from Mount Carmel High School visited Canterbury House on Friday, March 22 to reflect on the theme of “Poverty and Hunger.” They spoke with Br. Ayub about the guests who visit our parish Food Pantry and then helped stock shelves and clean. After lunch at Canterbury House, two mothers who recently arrived from South America spoke to the students. They explained how poverty and hunger in their home countries led them to the United States, and eventually Chicago. The mothers also spoke of their long journey through jungles and dangerous river crossings with their children. They shared their hopes and dreams for their families and their futures. It was a beautiful, powerful way to end our morning together. Thank you to the students and staff of Mt. Carmel for your help and fellowship! On St. Patrick’s Day, the Knights of Columbus hosted their highly anticipated Pancake Breakfast. Friends and family gathered in Jubilee Hall of Saint Ita’s church after the morning Masses. The Knights were helped by the postulants from the Conventual Franciscans. In preparation for Good Friday, the students from the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd religious education program prayed the Stations of the Cross with their parents and our Pastor Fr. Alejandro Lopez, OFM Conv. About 25 students attended and the group used a Stations booklet specifically designed for children. Fr. Alejandro had a different child lead the prayers at each station and students also carried the processional cross and candles. At the end, Father blessed everyone with the Relic of The Most Holy Cross of Our Lord Jesus Christ. Catechesis of the Good Shepherd fosters the relationship between God and children in harmony with children’s development. It is grounded in Scripture and the liturgy and framed by the education principles of Maria Montessori. Photos courtesy of Damian Chlanda.
