Plenary Indulgence at a Nativity Scene

12/8/2023

Opportunity to Obtain a Plenary Indulgence

In honor of the 800th Anniversary of the Christmas at Greccio, a plenary indulgence (removing all temporal punishment for a committed sin) has been granted from December 8, 2023 (the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception), until February 2, 2024 (the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord). The indulgence may be obtained by visiting a church served by Franciscans and praying before the nativity scene set up there. Even those who cannot physically visit a Franciscan church can experience the Indulgence by offering their sufferings or carrying out a spiritual sacrifice.
To honor Advent, we will not have our Nativities set up in full splendor until the weekend before Christmas. However, we will be leaving them in the churches through the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord (February 2, 2024).
What do you have to do?
  • Pray before the Nativity Scene at a Franciscan church like the three churches of our parish (St. Thomas of Canterbury, St. Gregory the Great, or Saint Ita).
  • Pray for the intentions of Pope Francis (An Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be).
  • Receive the Holy Eucharist and the sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession) within 20 days of praying in front of a Nativity Scene.
